Sources and References

References should let readers understand where a factual statement comes from. Their purpose is to support the article, not simply to add a recognisable institution’s name.

Match evidence to the statement

Use a specific document, report or specification when making a precise claim. Check the date, geographic scope and definitions. Product information can establish what a manufacturer says about its own product; it does not by itself prove a general market trend.

Distinguish different types of material

A project description, a personal reflection and a practical checklist have different evidence needs. Named project facts should be traceable to project information. Direct quotations should retain their meaning and attribution. Suggestions about appearance or arrangement should be expressed as choices rather than scientific certainties.

When evidence is missing

Remove unsupported figures or narrow the statement to what can be established. Do not turn an isolated cost into an average or a general example into an account of a real commission.
